About The Lucky Ones
In August 1992 a Candlelight vigil was held at the Southern Maryland Tri-County Animal Shelter
(TCAS) in Hughesville, MD as a memorial to the thousands of pets euthanized there annually because of pet
overpopulation. One outcome of the vigil was the establishment of Lucky Ones, Inc. in 1993 as a
low-cost spay/neuter clinic for all pet owners in Southern Maryland. Lucky Ones also became a rescue
operation for cats and dogs from TCAS, spaying/neutering and vaccinating them, and placing them with new
owners.
Over the last 15 years, Lucky Ones has spayed/neutered almost 71,000 owned pets, and rescued,
spayed/neutered over 13,600 cats and 2,100 dogs.
LuckyOnes rescues dogs from Tri-County Animal Shelter exclusively (PLEASE NOTE
that Lucky Ones DOES NOT accept surrendered or stray dogs from private individuals or other rescue
groups/shelters). If not previously altered, these dogs are spayed/neutered and
vaccinated prior to adoption. All dogs adopted from Lucky Ones are required to be altered to help
reduce pet overpopulation. The dogs are cared for and fostered in volunteer homes while they await
adoption. The rescued dogs are showcased for adoption at Petsmart in Waldorf, MD on Saturdays from
noon to 2 pm.
Lucky Ones has received numerous grants and awards, including the Petsmart
Charities Award for Excellence in Animal Welfare, the Bernice Barbour Animal Welfare Grant, and the
william Snyder Foundation for Animals Grant.
Lucky Ones is a not-for-profit, Maryland 501-C-3
corporation.
