Adopting a Dog From Lucky Ones

Adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment that must be carefully considered before making a decision.  Dogs may be cute and cuddly in pet stores or adoption organizations but are a full-time responsibility once you take them home.  Lucky Ones is concerned about the welfare of their dogs and committed to keeping the dogs' best interests the top priority.

Before Lucky Ones lets a dog go to a new home, we want to be sure that new owners understand the great responsibility they are about to take on.  We will ask many questions, including:

- Is there a fenced yard for the dog?

- Will the dog be left alone during the day?

- Are there other dogs in the home? What is their disposition?

- Are there small children in the home?

These questions are important for us to gauge how well a particular dog will fit into the new home and with the new owners.  Because we foster theses dogs before they are adopted, we can observe their behavior and have a pretty good idea of the type of home and environment they need.  We do not make a practice of doing "home checks" so we rely on new owners to provide honest answers to our questions.

When you adopt a dog from Lucky Ones, you will sign an adoption contract.  This contract has rules that new owners must adhere to in order to adopt a dog from us.  They include:

- Providing the dog with humane care and maintain their dog in accordance with all current and future municipal, county, and state laws and ordinances where the adopter resides.

- Keeping the dog as a household pet and provide it with necessary veterinary care, as needed to maintain health and well-being.

- Payment of a non-refundable adoption fee which covers Lucky Ones' costs to spay/neuter and provide required immunizations to the dog prior to adoption.  These costs will vary depending upon the amount of care the dog needs prior to adoption.  Some dogs come to us already altered (spayed/neutered) which reduces the adoption fee.

- Release and indemnification of Lucky Ones from any and all claims, known and unknown, at the time of adoption or thereafter arising in connection to the dog.  An example would be if the dog bit someone after adoption.  This would not be the responsibility of Lucky Ones.

- Agreement to return the dog to Lucky Ones should the adopter find they are not able to keep the dog.  The dog CANNOT be transferred to another owner nor can it be returned to any shelter.

- Consent to reclamation of the dog by Lucky Ones at any time for failure to comply with the terms of the contract or for any misrepresentation of fact made by the adopter to Lucky Ones.

As you can see, we are serious about making sure our dogs find forever homes where they will be able to live happy and healthy lives.
